Women’s Lives and Clothes in WW2: Ready for Action by Lucy Adlington is a fantastic book. I really enjoyed it.
I’m a sucker for these types of books anyway (everyday life in different times in history) but Adlington’s colorful and diverse book includes stories from real women, adding a very personal theme to many chapters. Readers are also gifted with many full color images from the era as well as a glimpse into the author’s extensive collection of WWII outfits.
Women’s Lives and Clothes in WW2 includes chapters on womens’ jobs during the war (in the home, factories, and on the frontlines), life during the Blitz, existence within a prison and concentration camp, the constant feeling of scarcity and making due, patriotism, and more.
Much of the book focuses on British life but the peeks into the lives of women all over the world make this book unique within its genre, highlighting both the similarities and differences between what was expected of women during this turbulent, dramatic, and difficult period in history.
