REVIEW: Images of the National Archives: Suffragettes
March 29, 2020

This book was sent to me by Pen and Sword Books in exchange for an honest review.

Images of The National Archives: Suffragettes by Laura Willmott is a treasure trove of photographs and documents from the turbulent times of the various sects of British feminists who devoted their time, resources, and even their lives to getting the vote.

This photographic time capsule features images of many kinds:

  • snapshots of women with their protest signs
  • photos of the most dangerous of the more militant suffragettes, collected by police
  • scans of letters written by suffragettes while imprisoned
  • political cartoons of the era where suffragists were portrayed as men in drag
  • related documents

The collection is fairly short, less than 100 pages, but includes a basic but well-written chronological history of the suffragette struggle between pages of high-quality images.

A quick and informative read, this is a great little book of photography for fans of women’s history.
