I’ve read two of Mimi Matthews’ historical non-fiction books and enjoyed them very much so I guessed her Victorian romance novel, The Lost Letter, would be just as good. And I was right!
England, 1860. An impoverished Victorian beauty is unexpectedly reunited with the now beastly earl who once broke her heart. Will they finally find their happily-ever-after? Or are some fairy-tale endings simply not meant to be?
Well-researched and romantic, Matthews weaves delicious details into a Beauty and the Beast type story. I would have preferred the story be a little bit longer to keep me waiting for their romantic reunion (spoiler, I guess? lol) a little longer and go a little deeper into their relationship, but it still filled my heart with ooey-gooey feelings all the same.
Matthews has a wonderful gift for vivid description and historical detail, bringing upper-class life the mid-19th century to the page.
A pleasure to read.
