Dude. I just binge-watched six episodes of Comedy Central’s sitcom Broad City. It’s funny, filthy and smart. It’s written by and stars Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson. (What?! Women can write funny stuff too?! WHAT OMG NO WAY!)
“Oh. This is going to be a GIRLS rip-off. That’s cool I guess.” That’s what I thought in the first 5 minutes of the first episode. BUT NAY NAY. They have some similarities (both based in New York, both are written by the starring actress, both are funny) but Broad City is a laugh-out-loud, fast-paced gross-out funny mostly while GIRLS weaves in the drama and is more thoughtful and artsy.
Plus Broad City technically pre-dates GIRLS, as it started as a web series in 2009. Aaaaaand Broad City has powerhouse Amy Poehler as an executive producer. Can’t beat that. These women swear and like sex and pot and have crappy jobs. They seem very real.
What kind of funny can I expect to enjoy from this Broad City show? Well, one topic that occasionally comes up is where a lady might keep her stash in order to hide it from the police and their drug dogs. Another joke is Abbi’s roommate’s disgusting live-in boyfriend, in addition to the hot bearded guy who lives down the hall. Ilana’s charm and lack of ambition are the cherry and the whip cream on this sundae of awesome TV.
Now, seriously. Go watch it right now. Do it.
And don’t worry. This gem has already been picked up for a second season. Sweeeeeeet!
